Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Pinterest A DJ’s stage can vary from house parties to clubs, but Red Bull is giving them a global platform to perform their craft at the annual Red Bull Music 3Style World DJ Championships. This year, DJ Mark Thompson earned the title and he will be heading to Taipei, Taiwan on January 20 to 29, 2019 to battle on the global stage. DJ Mark Thompson performing his drum solo Red Bull Music 3Style has been advancing the DJ culture worldwide since 2010. Each year, they get the best DJ from numerous countries and have them battle it out to be the world champion. This year is the ninth installment of the competition, and 20 countries are participating in the selection. The Philippines is now on its 5th year of joining and is ready to crown its next representative for the World DJ Championships. The preliminary process for all states is identical. Early 2018, interested individuals were asked to submit a five-minute performance video to be evaluated by past Red Bull Music 3Style winners. Talents that stood out are chosen to compete in a Global Finals in Taipei, Taiwan. The six (6) DJ’s who advanced to the Red Bull Music 3Style Philippine National Finals are: • iNBiTUiN • Mark Thompson • Gavin Skewes • Arpee Ong • Jan Musa • DYHA Each entry was judged on skill, originality, and music selection, but it all boiled down to what they displayed from their arsenal at Xylo at the Palace, in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, last November 17th, 2018. The club was packed with an audience eager to party to the jam of a potential world winner as soon as it opened. To make things more intense, this year’s selection of judges includes two of the most influential names in the DJ scene— DJ Shintaro (Japan, 2013 World Champion) and DJ Puffy (Barbados, 2016 World Champion). The night started with a set from DJ Shintaro before the contestants were given 15 minutes to appeal to the crowd and judges. First DJ in and it already had people up on their feet with crowd-favorite songs. After much deliberation, music producer DJ Mark Thompson won and became the Philippine representative for the World DJ Championships. “That was the most intense 15 minutes of my life—the vibe was incredible,” exclaims Mark. “The team at Red Bull Music 3Style World Philippines were super kind, helpful, and motivating. This experience is something I will keep with me for the rest of my life. I had my friends, family, and partner supporting me. I can’t really put in words how it felt,” he adds. Red Bull Music 3Style PH National Champion The National Finals was actually the first DJ Competition he has ever joined, and his raw and undeniable talent may just prove victorious in the World Finals in Taipei. “I’m just going to enjoy it,” Mark states. “It’s a once in a lifetime type of thing. Hopefully, I can come up with some new fun ideas to play out for that day,” he adds. The night ended with an even more bang with an international icon, DJ Puffy, providing the celebratory finale. After everything is in order, DJ Mark, along with the other National Finalists winners from other countries and a select few global wildcards (from countries without National Final Events), will then make their way to Taiwan for an all-expense-paid trip to participate in the Red Bull Music 3Style World Finals IX.
