May 13 is the global celebration of World Cocktail Day which marks the publication date of the first definition of the word “cocktail.” The term “cocktail” was written by editor Harry Croswell on May 13, 1806, in response to a reader’s inquiry at the New York tabloid, The Balance and Columbian Repository.

For 2018, May 13 falls on the second Sunday in May, hence the date also concides with the celebration of Mother’s Day around the world. What better way to celebrate Mom’s special day than preparing her a glass of a freshly made craft cocktail? This way, you’re also toasting to World Cocktail Day!

We gathered bartenders from popular bars in Manila to share their special recipes for cocktails that are dedicated to Mom. Here are six cocktails you can prepare at home:

1. “Flowers for Mama”

  • Recipe by Lennon Aguilar
  • F&B Operations Supervisor at The Gilarmi Lounge, Discovery Primea
  • 6749 Ayala Ave, Makati, 1226 Metro Manila

Inspiration for the cocktail:

“When was the last time you said “I love you” to your mother? We sometimes forget that ‘mother knows best’ and that their wisdom and love surpasses what our hearts can feel and what our minds can comprehend.

Flowers for Mama symbolizes how I love my mother. I apologize if I don’t take every chance I have to say I love her, I apologize if sometimes I act like I don’t, and I apologize for the times I made her life harder. I love her because she’s the reason why I’m living and the reason why I’m surviving. This cocktail recipe for all the mothers who never ask for love in return but are always giving and loving as if their satisfaction comes from the love they provide rather than the love they receive.

Flowers for Mama is a cocktail with a right combination of sweet and tart. It is a happy and fruity drink with more fruit per sip, and the vinegar is more of an undertone. The acidic fragrance is created by the strawberry and rose essence, with fresh floral notes from Caorunn Gin and the rose-tinged, raspberry flavor of Hoegaarden Rosee. This recipe is perfect to sip for all moms this summer.”

“For this coming Mother’s Day, we are going to give tribute to all the mothers in the world for giving us exceptional care and love as we become who we are today. They also guide us in making right decisions and teach us how to be faithful to God. That’s why this cocktail is a tribute to my mother for her exceptional aruga. I used calamansi juice and calamansi liqueur because it reminds me of her calamansi remedy when I get sick, she always gives me calamansi juice to make me feel better. I added Sampaguita flowers in the recipe as a reminder of the flowers she buys every Sunday we attend church and offer it to the altar.”
