Everything You Need to Know About the First Annual Malt Manila Whisky Festival

Call us biased, but we believe that there are few things in life that are more fun than a whisky festival. We go for the unlimited tasting, the masterclasses with experts from all over the world, and the enlightening conversations with other people who love whisky, plus the chance to purchase bottles at a discounted price. The next big festival we’re looking forward to is Malt Manila, an event for whisky aficionados that will bring top whisky brands, experts, and connoisseurs together at Manila House on March 31, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 12 midnight for a full evening of whisky appreciation activities and masterclasses.

Malt Manila’s participating brands include The Macallan, The Glenlivet, Lagavulin, Kavalan, Glengoyne, Teeling, Aberlour, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenkichie, Highland Park, Oban, Talisker, Chivas, Royal Salute, Jameson, and Rare Japanese Whisky.

Included in the ticket prices are masterclasses led by Jay Sala of Rare Japanese Whisky, Elliot Faber (beverage director of Yardbird, Ronin, and Sunday’s Grocery), Great Whiskies of Speyside by Darren Hosie (brand ambassador of Chivas Brothers), and a whisky seminar by Lee Watson of ABV, Bitters, and Mandalay.

The first Malt Manila festival has been in the planning stages for a long time, and the fervor for whisky has only increased since its inception. “My company helped organize a whisky festival in Hong Kong last 2015 and we thought it would be a great idea to bring this exciting concept to the Philippines given the increasing interest Filipinos have shown in whisky,” shares Malt Manila founder Karrie Bitanga. “We focused on creating an annual curated whisky festival featuring a variety of whisky brands to help further educate the market about everything to do with this classic alcoholic beverage.”

The festival goes beyond educating the market through tasting and personal discovery and seeks to expand knowledge with masterclasses on whisky collecting and investing. And because whisky appreciation comes with enjoying the finer things in life, Malt Manila has also partnered with Tabacalera and Felipe and Sons for lifestyle-related activities such as cigar rolling masterclasses and a talk on custom tailoring, bespoke shoes, and grooming.

The annual festival is just the beginning for Malt Manila. The team behind it plans to build and cultivate a community of whisky lovers throughout 2017 with an ongoing series of whisky pocket events such as pairing dinners, appreciation nights, and masterclasses.
