The cocktail takes inspiration from the song Ang Pasko ay Sumapit. Originally composed by Cebuanos Vicente D. Rubi and Mariano Vestil in 1933 as Kasadya ning Táknaa (How Blissful is this Season), Ang Pasko ay Sumapit was then translated into Tagalog lyrics by Philippine National Artist Levi Celerio during the 1950s. The song still resonates in Filipino modern day culture and popularly performed by carolers.

“When we hear the song Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit, it means that the Christmas season is upon us and with the holiday comes Christmas treats and delicacies like puto bumbong a purple glutinous rice with muscovado sugar, butter, and grated fresh coconut. Puto bumbong is sold outside the churches usually available only during the Christmas season. Purple-luscious is a cocktail that takes its flavors from this rice delicacy, at Hanky Panky we played around those flavors and come up with our version.” —Joey
