Yes, you read right—hot Coke! This drink is a popular cold-remedy in Hong Kong and available on most restaurant menus. The original recipe is believed to be invented by a Hong Kong restaurant owner who created the recipe during winter time to sell more cokes off the menu. We don’t know for sure if it indeed improves colds because it has high sugar content but it’s definitely a great treat if you’re feeling under the weather!

It is quite soothing. The ginger has a spicy warmth that is comforting and the slightly bitter citrusy lemon balances the sweetness of the soda. Careful not to boil for too long. You’re not making syrup!

Ingredients

1 can of Coca-Cola
2-inch ginger (peeled and sliced)
½ lemon (sliced into wheels)
Hot Ginger, Coke, and Lemon
Directions
Heat a medium-sized saucepan and add Coke, ginger slices, and lemon slices.
Bring the mixture to a boil and lower the heat when it simmers.
Simmer for 10 minutes.
Pour into a cup. You may strain the slices of lemon and ginger or keep them in the cup. Cool for a few minutes and serve.
