Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Pinterest DrinkManila launched #TipYourBartenderPH as a way to help out our local bartending community during these trying times. Every Friday, for #DMHappyHour, we’re showcasing a bartender who will share a tasty cocktail recipe that viewers can do at home, as well as give them a platform to promote their small business. People can show their love by supporting the featured bartender’s business and directly sending them a tip. This week’s featured bartender is Son Quilaton of Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. Son didn’t see a career in bartending. He thought that he would be a chef, having gone to culinary school, plus his religion (Pentecostal Christian) discourages drinking alcohol. But it seems God has other plans for Son. His mentor, Efren Madrigal, made him realize that he could still be responsible in the industry and encouraged him to pursue bartending, and he’s been at it for six years. The pandemic brought a huge change for Son. It shut down his source of income, and as a father of 2 young children and the carer for 3 young half-siblings, the financial uncertainty caused a lot of stress and anxiety. But he didn’t let the frustration get the best of him. “That realize that even the most stable job can’t stay forever,” Son shares. “But this situation reminds me who was I before this pandemic, that I am a bartender and I belong to the industry where ideas are limitless so I decide to come back home to see my family.” Son thought of selling homemade cocktails, bu the liquor ban prevented him from pursuing that idea. He observed that while people are trying to keep away from the virus by wearing face masks and PPEs, which is absolutely important, people also need to boost their immune system to prevent getting sick. “That’s why i create Mr.Detox to help my community stay healthy while at home and help our local farmers by using there produce as main ingredients of Mr.Detox,” he says. Mr. Detox is a line of mocktails made from local ingredients that helps boost the immune system especially during these trying times. He also offers a detox kit comprised of dried fruits to be turned into detox tea. “In our industry, dehydration is very common method,” says Son. “Fresh fruits like citruses infused water is great for the immune system, however the fresh fruits have a short lifespan, that’s why I use this process to prolong the shelf life.” Mr. Detox immune boosting mocktails: Mayumi (moringa, ginger Tagalog, honey citrus) and Ginintuan (banana, lemongrass, licorice) He also wants to hep out local farmers as much as he can. “I’m so OC in choosing of my ingredients,” Son says. ” always make sure that all crops are not imported. We always ask the market where it comes from, which farm or province.” “Mr. Detox is also my way of contributing to our economy,” Son shares. “Tangkilikin and sariling atin (Support our own).” His healthy and delicious drinks are available in Bulacan for now, and offers free delivery in the Malolos area. He is thinking of bringing his drinks to Manila in the near future, so watch out for that. Catch Son Quilaton on #TipYourBartenderPH at 5:00 pm on June 26, Friday, on DrinkManila’s Facebook page.
