Recipe by Lester Ligon, bar manager at ABV (one of 2017 Asia’s 50 Best Bars) located at Basement Floor, 1209, 22 Jupiter, Makati

“The drink is all about the famous Charles Dickens novel, a classic albeit slightly terrifying holiday tale, A Christmas Carol. The story is about a grouchy old man named Ebenezer Scrooge who has lost his Christmas Spirit and was confronted by three ghostly visitors–the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come, who reminded him of the joy that the holidays can bring.

“The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge to his childhood days—for the drink I used banana milk as it is a familiar flavor that I remember from my childhood memory. Next, Scrooge is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Present, which shows him the realities and consequences of his current actions. With this, I took something we all love, as this is an all-time favorite, chocolate. So, I made Homemade Cocoa Syrup. Lastly, Fernet-Averna Amaro Blend, sharp bitter liqueurs that represent the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come as Scrooge was catapulted into a horrifying future, ultimately forced to face his grave.” – Lester

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Bulleit Bourbon
  • 1/2 oz homemade cocoa syrup
  • 1/2 oz Fernet-Averna Amaro Blend
  • 2 oz banana milk

Glass used: Coupette glass

Garnish: Star Anise

Ice used: Tube Ice

Directions:

  1. Pour all ingredients in a shaker.
  2. Add ice and roll for about 4 times before shaking for 8 seconds, then strain in a coupette glass.
  3. Garnish with star anise.

Tasting Notes: With its round, milky taste and bittersweet finish, this drink is perfect for sipping during Christmas Eve while everyone takes turns opening gifts.

Note: This drink is not on the menu of ABV but you can ask them to whip it up for you if you drop by.
