Johnnie Walker, the world’s #1 Scotch whisky, marked their 200th year with the release of a limited-release collection that explores and celebrates the distinct flavors of the four corners of Scotland.

Those who are fans of Johnnie Walker Black’s balanced flavors of smoke, fresh fruit, rich fruit, and creamy vanilla will be delighted to know that the Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series dives deeper into these flavors by focusing on each note and highlighting the regions of Scotland. The new collection features four, 12-year-old blended Scotch whiskies from some of the world’s most famous distilleries. Three of these limited editions are blended malts (Speyside, Highlands, and Islay), one is a blended Scotch whisky made from single malts and grain whisky (Lowlands).

Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series offers two of these exclusive blends to the Philippine market: the Johnnie Walker Black Label Speyside Origin and the Johnnie Walker Black Label Lowlands Origin.

Johnnie Walker Origins Speyside

Johnnie Walker Black Label Speyside Origin is a vibrant and fruity whisky with hints of cut green apple and orchard fruit. Made exclusively from quality single malts from the Speyside region, it features whisky from the distilleries of Cardhu and Glendullan at its heart and aged in refill casks and ex-bourbon. This whisky would shine in a classic whisky sour (maybe with the addition of a dash of orange bitters for extra oomph) or a Boulevardier.

Johnnie Walker Origins Lowlands

Johnnie Walker Black Label Lowlands Origin has a luxuriously sweet and creamy mouthfeel, with vanilla character and subtle notes of toffee. It is made exclusively from a variety of single malt and grain whiskies from the Lowlands, including distilleries of Glenkinchie and Cameronbridge, and aged in ex-bourbon casks. This malt/grain blend will hold up in a simple yet fresh-tasting highball, with an orange or lemon twist for added freshness. This would be a great whisky for beginners who want to explore.

“The Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series focuses on the most distinct flavors that Johnnie Walker Black Label drinkers love, and creates other expressions out of those,” shares Rian Asiddao, Diageo Reserve Brand Ambassador. “It’s perfect for those who are feeling adventurous and want to dabble into different tastes.”

The packaging also serves as a guide to the whisky inside and the region it comes from. The limited-edition series boxes are decked out with a map of Scotland with the region the whisky originates from highlighted, and includes some interesting facts about the distilleries.

Johnnie Walker continues to discover and celebrate the finest whiskies from all over Scotland, and the Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series, created to explore the best flavors the country has to offer, is another point of pride for the brand. The series is aimed at Johnnie Walker drinkers and people wanting to know more about Scotch.

The Launch Event

Johnnie Walker partnered with one of Manila’s cocktail joints, OTO, for the launch of the Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series last September 7. The exclusive online event was hosted by charming and hilarious Johnnie Walker Brand Ambassador Nico Bolzico. The event kicked off with an awesome set by Robert Seña and closed by Religion Black.

Diageo Reserve Brand Ambassador Rian Asiddao led the tasting of the iconic blend Johnnie Walker Black Label, Cardhu 12, and the limited edition Black Label Speyside Origin and Lowlands Origin. OTO Owner David Ong joined in the conversation to share his thoughts on the series and Scotch whisky in general, as well as trade playful banter with Nico.

After exploring the flavors and nuances of the whiskies, it was time to experience them in cocktails. This may have been a virtual affair, but guests were given a feeling of being in a bar when they were treated to the full OTO experience as Diageo Reserve World Class 2019 Philippines Bartender of the Year and OTO Head Bartender David Abalayan whipped up and walked people through the inspiration behind and the process of making the limited edition cocktails using the Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series. These cocktails were a sneak preview, as they will be available for a limited run in OTO for a month starting sometime in September as the second installement of their monthly relief cocktail collabs.

Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series OTO cocktails: (L) Good Times, Bad Times (Johnnie Walker Black Label Lowlands Origin, corn tea, ripe mango, palm sugar syrup. It’s smoky, with flavors of toasted nuts, popcorn, and caramel) and (R) The Take Over, The Breaks Over (Johnnie Walker Black Label Speyside Origin, sherry port, pandan syrup, citric adjusted tepache. It’s citrusy with hints of pineapple, vanilla, and berries)

They drew inspiration from rock music styles for these cocktails: classic rock for Good Times, Bad Times (Led Zeppelin) and emo-punk rock for The Take Over, The Breaks Over (Fall Out Boy). The OTO crew also made playlists for each cocktail, which you can check out on Spotify.
