Bitter drinks? Who would like that? Well, a lot of people do, and it’s even celebrated worldwide. One of the most famous bitter cocktails is called a Negroni, and it’s got a history dating back to 100 years.

The Negroni was created 100 years ago by the renowned Count Camilo Negroni in the city of Florence, at the Caffé Cassoni. Count Negroni presented bartender Fosco Scarselli with the task to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano. Scarselli replaced the traditional soda water and lemon twist with a splash of gin and a slice of orange, from that moment on, the Negroni was born. Italians drink Negronis before dinner as an aperitif, but we at DrinkManila thinks the best time to have a Negroni is, well, all the time (it’s our favorite!). The bittersweet, complex, and refreshing cocktail made with equal parts gin, vermouth, and Campari is a classic drink that lends itself well to creative interpretations by talented bartenders.

Imbibe Magazine and Campari launched Negroni Week in 2013 to celebrate the beloved cocktail and raise money for charities worldwide. Since then, Negroni Week has grown from about 120 participating venues to almost 10,000 sites around the world, and to date, they have collectively raised about $2 million for charitable causes. For the past three years, a few Manila bars had participated in the program but it became less and less each year. This year, to introduce Negroni Week to bartenders and drinkers in Metro Manila, Campari’s Regional Brand Ambassador in Southeast Asia, Symphony Loo, conducted Negroni Master Classes and bar shifts. Today, from June 24 to 30, 22 bars in Manila are participating so you can order various Negroni interpretations with their own signature twists.
