Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Pinterest The Negroni was created over 100 years ago when Count Camilo Negroni in the city of Florence tasked bartender Fosco Scarselli at the Caffé Cassoni to make his favorite cocktail, the Americano, stronger. Scarselli was up for the challenge and replaced the traditional soda water and lemon twist with a splash of gin and a slice of orange, and the Negroni was born. Usually enjoyed by Italians as an aperitif before dinner, we at DrinkManila think the best time to have a Negroni is all the time! Complex, bittersweet, and refreshing, this classic drink made with equal parts gin, vermouth, and Campari lends itself well to creative interpretations by talented bartenders. Negroni Week was launched by Campari and Imbibe Magazine back in 2013 to celebrate the beloved cocktail and raise money for charities worldwide. Negroni Week has grown from about 120 participating venues to almost 10,000 sites around the world since then and is an event that lovers of the cocktail look forward to every year. Manila bars have even participated in the program in recent years. The growing homegrown cocktail scene and local drinkers’ developing palates, helped increase the appreciation for the Negroni. With the COVID-19’s global spread continuing and resulting in ongoing and widespread bar and restaurant closures, and with countries and communities implementing different sets of rules and restrictions, Negroni Week 2020 (September 14-20) has been moved to the virtual world so that everyone can celebrate safely at home. This year’s fundraising goals will be focused solely on raising money for organizations and initiatives from all over the world that are providing much-needed relief to the hospitality industry, which has suffered great losses due to the global pandemic. Donations from consumers will be accepted for the first time. Visit NegroniWeek.com to find out more and see how you can donate to other charities.
