House of Suntory, makers of popular Japanese whiskies Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu, has just released a new blended whisky named Suntory Toki. Since 1923, Suntory Whisky has been renowned for its House of Master Blenders and for their Art of Blending. Toki, which means time in Japanese, is a blended whisky crafted with reverence for ancestry and heritage of the House of Suntory at the same time inspired by reinvention.

House of Suntory’s fourth chief blender Shinji Fukuyo took a fresh approach with Suntory Toki by selecting two contrasting whiskies from the distillery. Suntory blends often use Yamazaki malts as their key component but for Toki, Fukuyo selected singular Hakushu American white oak cask malt whisky as the first pillar and Chita heavy-type grain whisky as the blend’s second pillar. The unique blend between Hakushu malt and Chita grain whiskies gives Suntory Toki its silky taste and vivid character.

Toki contains 43 percent ABV (Alc./Vol.) and is clear gold in color. According to reviews, Toki has has hints of basil, green apple, Asian pear, and honey a reminiscent of the fruity nose of Hakushu. It tastes silky smooth in the mouth and shows hints of lemon citrus, grapefruit, and green grapes, with spicy notes of peppermint and thyme. It finishes with white pepper and ginger and sweet and spicy hints of vanilla oak that can be attributed to the blend of Chita.

The blended Suntory Toki can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, as a highball, or mixed as a cocktail. House of Suntory recommends the Suntory Toki highball for those interested in experiencing how whisky is enjoyed in Japan today.
